In the continued series titled "Savage Apparel" the connection to traditional art is obvious
with the inclusion of fur, beads, feathers, etc. Although these pieces are made with
“native” materials, and their forms are reminiscent of baskets or handbags, it is their
content or messages that make them unique. Some of them carry a title which reflect the story
behind their construction and use of material, such as “Blood Purse” that references
the U.S. Government’s identification standard for indigenous peoples.
With these pieces I am also commenting on stereotypical
ideas related to “native art.” Many people label our work as craft,
with the notion that it is generated from a previously existing pattern
and is merely functional, crude and always made with natural material.
Savage Apparel consists of natural and industrial materials and are
wild non-functional objects.
The primary intent is to challenge outdated artistic stereotypes.
