ARTIST STATEMENT

Doralee Sanchez received the Native name of SiLowLeetSa, from her great great grand mother, Aurelea Mary Celestine. The name has been handed down from family members of many generations of the past.

The names SiLowLeetSa and SiLawLeetSa came from the names of two swans. SiLawLeetSa is the name given to Doralee's daughter.

SiLowLeetSa is a tribal member of the Lummi Nation. She grew up fishing and harvesting seafood with her Beloved Mother, Sahash, Doralee Pearl Solomon. Sahash was a talented master of traditional cultural arts, and these talents were passed on to her daughter, such as sewing, painting, and beadwork. Sahash was one the first successful fisherwomen of the Lummi tribe.

SiLowLeetSa enjoys writing Coastal Salish legends, based adventures of her own, family and ancestors. Her family history, culture and life experiences are expressed through her paintings and works of art. Her passionate love for the water, beaches, and sealife of the San Juan Islands is put to art as a reflection of the Indigenous Peoples of the Pacific Northwest.
