Denise is a member of the Tshimsian Nation in Ketchikan, Alaska. She graduated from high school in 1975 and immediately became a housewife and mother. 25 years later she decided to go back to school. She choose Northwest Indian College, because it had a small campus setting and a good Native American Arts Program. One of her first classes was Pacific Northwest Basketry, instructed by Anna Jefferson. She was amazed by what pieces of bark could be turned into beautiful baskets. She was and still is "in love," with basketry making. Her ultimate goal is to open a Pacific Northwest Coast Art studio. By doing this, her main driving force behind this goal is to keep her tradition alive and flourishing through basket making.
