ARTIST STATEMENT

At this time I would like to introduce myself and give some idea of my talents. My name is Clarissa Young, also known as Clarissa Finkbonner. My tribe is The Lummi Nation. My Indian name is Xumps. Also I have been honored by being given another Indian name, which is Hy Ya`Kola.

When I was about nine years old I was set on the floor, given some beads and a loom, plus needle and thread. I have been beading ever since. Along the way I have spent much time learning from my elders, and lots of experience by trial and error.

Eagle beadingHaving spent many years on the Pow Wow trail and the Canoe trail, I learned the retail business by setting up & selling my wares. A long time ago I learned to make traditional shawls because of the demand. Then too there were the Salish shawls, mostly for give aways.

Later I started to dance with the round drum Pow Wows, which necessitated my need to make Regalia. I wasn't happy just making traditional gear for myself & others. I had to know how to make Jingle, Fancy, Grass, etc.

The reason I started selling beading supplies on the trail is because I had so much left over after I made something. I started ordering extra and a diversity of supplies and got into business full time.

In 1991 I went to North West Indian College for a business degree. At that time I learned to make traditional Salish cedar baskets. My elders had taught me something about baskets but I never got serious until I went to NWIC.

At the present time I teach Beading at NWIC. The student can do the type of beading they want: loom, applique, peyote, or what they desire.

Hope this will give the reader some idea of what I do.
