ARTIST STATEMENT

Charlie Miller was born in Hanna, Wyoming; his mother was Lummi, his father German and Cherokee. He was a Stonemason by trade and in the late sixties it was this profession that inspired him to sculpture in stone. Charlie’s Spanish style sculptures were exhibited from Florida and Georgia to Louisiana and Mississippi. However, in 1985 he made his way back home to the Lummi Nation, where he had to learn all over again. He began by carving animal imagery before he attempted to carve in wood, which became second natured as soon as his knife became embedded in the red cedar. Charlie has received international acclaim and recognition in Japan, where his bone, stone and woodcarvings are widely sought, and he published a children’s book in Japanese.
