| St el>la & Smeyes
means Fawn & Doe in the Lummi language. This is the story of Sma
nis ten, who was never happy with who he was. One day Sma nis ten
saw spotted St el>la. He asked St el>la how he had gotten
his beautiful spots. Now St el>la did not like Sma nis ten,
for he was often very mean. |
| St el>la said, "My mother marked them on me
with a red hot fire. She dug a hole and made a soft bed of grass and twigs
in it. She placed me in the hole and covered me with more grass and twigs.
She started a fire in the grass and twigs surrounding me. She then poked
me with a stick to make the spots on me." Sma nis ten
asked St el>la to help him have spots. And so
St el>la and Sma nis ten dug a hole and filled it with grass
and twigs. St el>la put Sma nis ten in and covered him with
more grass and twigs and lit the fire. |
| St el>la then ran away to play with his friends.
When he looked back at the fire he saw Sma nis ten floating up into
the sky. He had become smoke, and he drifted away. |
